About Nurse to Ireland
Your skills. A global future.
Nurse to Ireland is an independent information website for nurses who want to build a career in Ireland. We turn complex registration, immigration and workplace information into clear, practical guides you can follow step by step.
Why we created this site
Every year, thousands of nurses from around the world decide to move to Ireland. Many of them spend weeks searching forums, social media groups and scattered official pages, trying to piece together what to do first. Some receive conflicting advice. Others pay agents for services that turn out to be unnecessary, or fall for promises that no one can keep.
We created Nurse to Ireland to fix that. Our goal is simple: give every nurse a clear, honest and well-organised guide to the whole journey, from checking eligibility to settling into life in Ireland. We want you to understand each step, know which official body is responsible for it, and make informed decisions about your career and family.
What we cover
- Registration. How the NMBI process works, what documents you need and what your decision letter means.
- English requirements. IELTS and OET explained, with preparation tips.
- Adaptation and aptitude tests. What compensation measures involve and how to plan for them.
- Work permits and visas. The Critical Skills Employment Permit, entry visas, arrival registration and family reunification.
- Pay and benefits. How HSE pay scales work, allowances, tax and take-home pay.
- Career development. Specialist roles, leadership, education and advanced practice.
- Everyday life. Housing, cost of living, transport, schools, healthcare and community.
How we create our content
We take accuracy seriously, because the decisions you make based on this information affect your career, finances and family. Our guides are based on information published by official Irish bodies, including the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the Health Service Executive, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Immigration Service Delivery and Revenue. We also draw on the shared experience of nurses who have completed the process.
We write in plain English so that our guides are easy to follow whether English is your first or second language. We explain official terms, avoid unnecessary jargon and break long processes into clear steps.
Rules, fees and processing times change. We review our pages regularly and update them when official guidance changes. Each guide points you to the official source so you can confirm the latest details before acting. If you spot something out of date, please tell us through our contact page.
Our principles
- Honesty. We describe the benefits of nursing in Ireland and the challenges, including housing costs and processing times.
- Independence. We are not part of the NMBI, the HSE or any government department, and we do not decide registration or immigration applications.
- Nurse first. Our content is written for nurses, not to sell services. We warn readers about scams and unethical recruitment practices.
- Clarity. Every guide aims to answer real questions nurses ask, in the order they need the answers.
- Respect. We value the skills nurses bring from every country and every healthcare system.
Who our guides are for
Our readers include newly qualified nurses exploring their first move abroad, experienced specialists looking for career growth, nurses already working in the UK, the Gulf or elsewhere who are considering Ireland, and nurses who have already arrived and want help with the next stage. We also help families of nurses who want to understand permits, schools and daily life.
Many of our readers come from India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Brazil and other countries with strong nursing traditions. Whatever your background, the core steps are the same, and we highlight where your nationality or training country may make a difference.
What we do not do
To keep our information independent and trustworthy, we want to be clear about our limits. We do not process NMBI applications, issue permits or visas, or guarantee jobs. We are not a recruitment agency and we do not charge nurses fees for placements. We do not give individual legal or immigration advice. For decisions about your specific case, always contact the relevant official body or a qualified, regulated adviser.
How to use this website
If you are just starting, read our main guide on the home page first. It gives you an overview of the full journey and links to every detailed guide. Then follow the guides in order: English tests, NMBI registration, work permits and visas, pay, and finally life in Ireland. Bookmark the pages you need and return to them at each stage. If you are already part way through, jump straight to the guide for your current step.
A message to nurses
Moving to another country to care for people is a brave and generous decision. The process can feel long, and there will be days when paperwork and waiting are frustrating. Thousands of nurses have walked this path before you and now lead wards, teach students and support their families in Ireland. With good information and patience, you can do the same. We hope our guides make your journey a little easier.
