Nurse Take-Home Pay Calculator Ireland

Know what lands in your account.

Enter your gross yearly pay and this calculator estimates your net pay after income tax, Universal Social Charge (USC), Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) and pension contributions. All tax settings are editable.

Estimate your net pay

The default tax settings are examples based on recent Irish rates for a single person. Tax bands and credits change with each Budget, so update them for the current year using Revenue’s published rates. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

How Irish payroll tax works

Ireland uses PAYE (pay as you earn). Your employer deducts three main charges before you are paid:

  • Income tax. Charged at a standard rate up to your standard rate band, and a higher rate above it. Your tax credits, such as the personal and employee credits, reduce the tax you pay.
  • USC. The Universal Social Charge is charged in bands at increasing rates on gross income.
  • PRSI. Pay Related Social Insurance is charged as a percentage of income and builds your entitlement to social welfare benefits and the State pension.

Public sector nurses also pay pension contributions, which this calculator lets you include as a percentage.

Avoid emergency tax

When you start work in Ireland, get your PPS number quickly and register for Revenue’s myAccount. Your employer then receives your tax credits and bands. Without them, you may pay emergency tax, which is higher. Any overpaid tax is refunded once your record is updated.

Married or civil partner couples

Married couples and civil partners can choose joint assessment, which can increase the standard rate band and transfer credits. If your spouse works or plans to, check how joint assessment affects your household tax. This calculator assumes a single person; edit the band and credits if your situation is different.

Other things that affect your net pay

  • Additional tax credits, such as rent credit, if you qualify
  • Health insurance tax relief
  • Union subscriptions
  • Salary deductions for parking, meals or schemes
  • Bike to work or travel pass schemes
