Nurse Salary Calculator Ireland

See your real earnings.

Basic salary is only part of what nurses earn in Ireland. Enter your basic pay and the unsocial hours you work, and this calculator estimates your gross yearly and monthly pay including premiums.

Calculate your gross pay

Default premium rates are typical examples for the public health service. Rates and rules vary by employer and agreement, so check your contract and current HSE pay rules.

How the calculator works

The calculator converts your basic annual salary into an hourly rate using your contracted weekly hours. It then adds premium pay for the unsocial hours you enter. For example, a premium of 25% means each of those hours is paid at an extra quarter of your hourly rate on top of your basic pay. Public holiday hours are entered as a yearly total, because they happen on specific days.

Where to find your basic salary

If you work in the public sector, your basic salary is the point you are on in the HSE consolidated pay scale for your grade. New staff nurses usually start at the first point unless previous experience is credited. Private employers state your salary in your contract. Read our nurse salary guide for how scales work.

Understanding premium pay

  • Night duty. Hours worked during the night period attract a premium.
  • Saturdays. Hours worked on Saturday attract a premium.
  • Sundays. Sunday hours attract a higher premium than Saturdays.
  • Public holidays. Working a public holiday attracts extra pay or time off in lieu, depending on your employer.
  • Overtime. Hours beyond your contract may be paid at overtime rates and are not included here.

From gross to take-home

This calculator shows gross pay before tax. To estimate what you take home after income tax, USC, PRSI and pension contributions, use our take-home pay calculator.

Tips to increase your earnings

  • Ask for incremental credit for previous nursing experience.
  • Complete postgraduate qualifications that attract allowances.
  • Apply for senior and specialist posts once you have experience.
  • Consider rosters with regular nights or weekends if they suit your life.
