Filipino Nurses in Ireland: Requirements and Step-by-Step Guide
From the Philippines to Ireland.
Filipino nurses have worked in Irish hospitals for more than two decades and are respected for their skills and compassion. This guide explains the steps, documents and Philippine-specific requirements for moving to Ireland as a nurse.

A long tradition
Ireland began large-scale recruitment of Filipino nurses in the early 2000s, and today Filipino nurses work in almost every Irish hospital and many nursing homes. Many have progressed to senior and management roles. The Filipino community is well organised, with associations, church groups and cultural events in all major cities.
Eligibility
Most Filipino applicants hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and are licensed by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) after passing the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination. The NMBI assesses your BSN programme, including theory and clinical hours, against Irish standards. Your PRC licence should be valid and in good standing.
Documents Filipino nurses need
- BSN diploma
- Transcript of records showing subjects, units, theory hours and Related Learning Experience (clinical) hours
- Verification of qualification from your nursing school
- Certificate of good standing from the PRC and from any other regulator where you worked, such as in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or the UK
- Certified passport copy and proof of name change, such as a PSA marriage certificate
- IELTS Academic or OET results
- Certificates of employment from hospitals
Ask your school for a transcript that breaks down clinical hours by area, such as medical-surgical, maternal and child, community and mental health. Read our NMBI document checklist.
English test
Filipino nurses usually need IELTS Academic or OET for NMBI registration, even though nursing is taught in English. Many Filipino nurses prefer OET because it uses real clinical situations. See our IELTS vs OET guide.
Philippine deployment requirements
Before working abroad, Filipino workers generally need to complete requirements set by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), which absorbed the functions of the former POEA. This may include contract verification, pre-departure orientation and an Overseas Employment Certificate. Requirements differ for workers hired through licensed agencies and for direct hires, so check current DMW rules early in the process.
Compensation measures
Most Filipino nurses receive a decision letter asking for adaptation or an aptitude test. Many Irish employers recruit Filipino nurses straight into adaptation places. See our adaptation and aptitude test guide.
Permit and visa
Filipino citizens need an employment permit and an entry visa. Your employer supports your Critical Skills Employment Permit, and once it is approved you apply for an employment visa. After arriving, register your immigration permission and apply for a PPS number. Read our nurse visa guide.
Bringing your family
Critical Skills permit holders can usually bring their spouse and children through join family visas. Prepare PSA-issued marriage and birth certificates, your Irish documents, payslips and proof of housing. See bring your family to Ireland.
Pay and remittances
Irish nurse salaries allow many Filipino nurses to support family at home while building a life in Ireland. Compare money transfer services carefully, as fees and exchange rates vary widely. Read our nurse salary guide to plan your budget.
Ethical recruitment
Choose licensed agencies and avoid anyone asking for excessive placement fees. Confirm that your agency and employer meet DMW and Irish requirements. Never pay for guaranteed registration or visas.
Life in Ireland for Filipino nurses
Filipino shops, restaurants and Sunday Masses with Filipino choirs are common in Dublin and other cities. Community groups organise Independence Day celebrations, basketball leagues and Simbang Gabi before Christmas. Many Filipino nurses say the community feels like an extended family.
