Indian Nurses in Ireland: Requirements and Step-by-Step Guide
From India to Ireland.
Indian nurses are one of the largest groups of international nurses in Ireland, working in hospitals and nursing homes across the country. This guide covers the requirements, documents and practical steps specific to nurses trained in India.

Why Ireland is popular with Indian nurses
Ireland offers Indian nurses a clear registration route, strong demand, family-friendly permits and an established Indian community. Malayali nurses from Kerala in particular have built strong networks across Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and many towns, with community associations, churches, temples and Indian grocery shops. Many nurses say the support of these communities made their first months much easier.
Eligibility for Indian-trained nurses
Most Indian nurses who apply to the NMBI hold a B.Sc. Nursing degree or a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) diploma. Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing holders also apply. The NMBI assesses each qualification individually, comparing theory and clinical hours with Irish requirements. Your registration with your State Nursing Council must be valid and in good standing.
Because many Indian programmes combine general nursing and midwifery, your transcript needs to show clearly how many hours you completed in each area. This affects which compensation measures the NMBI asks for.
Documents Indian nurses need
- Nursing degree or diploma certificate from your college or university
- Detailed mark sheets and a transcript showing theory and clinical hours by year and area
- Verification of qualification from your college or university, sent as the NMBI instructs
- Certificate of good standing from your State Nursing Council, plus any other regulator where you have worked, such as Gulf health authorities
- Certified passport copy and proof of any name change
- IELTS Academic or OET results meeting NMBI requirements
- Experience certificates from hospitals where you worked
Indian universities and councils can be slow to issue verification documents, so start early and follow up regularly. Our NMBI document checklist explains each document.
English test: IELTS or OET
Even though Indian nursing programmes are taught in English, the NMBI usually requires Indian nurses to pass IELTS Academic or OET. OET is popular among Indian nurses because it uses healthcare scenarios, and many OET coaching centres operate in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi. Choose the test where your practice scores are highest. Read our IELTS vs OET guide.
Adaptation or aptitude test
Most Indian nurses receive a decision letter requiring a compensation measure. Many choose adaptation with an employer who recruits directly in India, while others travel to Ireland for the aptitude test. See our adaptation and aptitude test guide to decide.
Work permit and visa
Indian citizens need an employment permit and an entry visa. After a job offer, your employer supports your Critical Skills Employment Permit application. Once the permit is approved, you apply online for an employment visa and submit documents through the visa application centre in India. Allow time for both stages.
After arrival, register your immigration permission, get your Irish Residence Permit and apply for a PPS number. Read the full nurse visa guide.
Bringing your family from India
Critical Skills permit holders can usually bring their spouse and children. Your family will need join family visas with marriage and birth certificates, your Irish documents, payslips and proof of accommodation. Spouses may be allowed to work in Ireland. See bring your family to Ireland.
Pay compared with India and the Gulf
Irish nursing pay is far higher than typical salaries in India and is competitive with many Gulf roles once you include premiums, pension, leave and long-term residence options. Unlike most Gulf contracts, the Irish route leads to permanent residence and citizenship. Read our nurse salary guide.
Recruitment: stay safe
Many agencies recruit Indian nurses for Ireland. Choose agencies that are transparent about fees, ideally ones paid by employers. Never pay for a guaranteed job or registration, and confirm any employer through its official website. Report suspicious offers to the authorities.
Life in Ireland for Indian nurses
You will find Indian restaurants and grocery shops in every city, Hindu temples, Indian Christian churches including Syro-Malabar and Orthodox communities, gurdwaras and mosques, and regular cultural festivals such as Onam and Diwali celebrations. Cricket clubs are growing too. Direct and one-stop flights connect Dublin with major Indian cities.
