Pakistani Nurses in Ireland: NMBI Registration, Visa and Jobs
From Pakistan to Ireland.
More and more nurses from Pakistan are building careers in Ireland. This guide explains the documents you need from Pakistani institutions, how NMBI registration works for you, and how to secure a job, permit and visa.

Why Pakistani nurses choose Ireland
Ireland offers a clear and transparent registration process, demand for nurses across the country, a family-friendly permit and a route to permanent residence. A growing Pakistani community lives in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, with mosques, halal shops and community organisations that help newcomers settle.
Eligibility
Most Pakistani applicants hold a BSc Nursing (Generic), Post RN BSc Nursing or a General Nursing Diploma, often with a midwifery or specialty diploma. You must be registered with the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PNMC), formerly the Pakistan Nursing Council, and in good standing. The NMBI assesses each qualification individually. Nurses who hold a diploma plus a Post RN degree should include both, with full transcripts.
Documents you will need
- Nursing degree and diploma certificates
- Detailed transcripts showing theory and clinical hours by area and year
- Verification of qualification from your college or university
- Certificate of good standing from the PNMC
- Good standing certificates from any other regulator, for example in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE or Oman, if you worked there
- Certified passport copy and proof of name change, such as a NADRA marriage registration certificate
- IELTS Academic or OET results
- Experience letters from hospitals
Some Pakistani institutions require you to request documents in person or through attested channels. Plan for this early. See our NMBI document checklist.
English requirements
Pakistani nurses usually need IELTS Academic or OET for NMBI registration. Both are widely available in Pakistani cities. Focus on the writing section, which is the most common reason nurses fall short. Read our IELTS vs OET guide.
Compensation measures
Most Pakistani nurses receive a decision letter requiring adaptation or an aptitude test, often because programme structures and clinical hour breakdowns differ from Irish requirements. Read our adaptation and aptitude test guide.
Ethical recruitment rules
Ireland follows the World Health Organization’s Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel. Pakistan has appeared on the WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards List in the past, which discourages agencies and employers from actively recruiting in listed countries. The list is reviewed every few years, with an update due in 2026, so check the latest edition. Even when a country is listed, individual nurses can still apply directly to Irish employers for advertised jobs.
Finding a job
Many Pakistani nurses start in nursing homes or regional hospitals that offer adaptation places. Prepare a clear CV listing your wards, specialties and years of experience, and highlight Gulf experience if you have it. Read nursing jobs with visa sponsorship for where to look and how to avoid scams.
Permit and visa
Pakistani citizens need a Critical Skills Employment Permit and an employment visa. After the permit is approved, apply online for the visa and submit your documents as instructed for Pakistan. Visa processing can take time, so apply as soon as your permit is granted. Read our nurse visa guide.
Family
Critical Skills permit holders can usually bring their spouse and children. Prepare NADRA-registered marriage and birth certificates, Family Registration Certificates where helpful, your Irish documents, payslips and proof of housing. See bring your family to Ireland.
Faith and daily life
Mosques operate in all major cities, and many hospitals provide prayer rooms for staff. Halal food is easy to find in cities and increasingly in towns. During Ramadan, talk to your manager about shift planning; most teams are supportive. Pakistani and South Asian associations organise Eid gatherings and cultural events, and cricket clubs are active in many areas.
Pay and savings
Irish nursing salaries, premiums and a pension offer strong financial security compared with typical pay in Pakistan. Living costs are high, especially rent in Dublin, so many nurses share housing at first. Plan carefully with our cost of living calculator.
