First Week in Ireland: Checklist for New Nurses

Land well, start strong.

Your first week in Ireland is busy. This checklist helps you complete the essential tasks in the right order so you can focus on starting your new job.

Before you fly

  • Keep passport, visa, permit, contract and NMBI documents in your hand luggage.
  • Carry printed and digital copies of all documents.
  • Confirm your accommodation address and arrival instructions.
  • Bring some euro for the first days.
  • Pack a waterproof jacket and layers.

Day 1 to 2: arrive and settle

  1. Pass immigration at the airport and show your documents.
  2. Get to your accommodation and rest.
  3. Buy a SIM card so you have an Irish phone number.
  4. Contact your employer to confirm arrival and start date.
  5. Find your nearest supermarket and pharmacy.

Day 2 to 4: official tasks

  1. Register your immigration permission and book an appointment for your Irish Residence Permit as instructed by the immigration service.
  2. Apply for a PPS number with the Department of Social Protection.
  3. Open a bank account. App-based and traditional banks are both options. You need your passport and proof of address.
  4. Register for Revenue myAccount once you have your PPS number, to avoid emergency tax.

Day 4 to 7: settle into work and life

  • Attend induction and collect your ID badge and uniform.
  • Learn your route to work and travel times for early shifts.
  • Get a Leap Card if you live in a city.
  • Register with a GP near your home.
  • Join community and nursing groups for your nationality.
  • Message family to let them know you have settled.

Keep a folder

Create a folder with copies of your contract, permit, IRP, PPS letter, bank details, tenancy agreement and NMBI correspondence. You will need these for future applications, such as family reunification and Stamp 4.

Look after yourself

Moving countries is exhausting. Eat well, rest when you can and ask for help. Most hospitals have international nurse networks, and colleagues are usually happy to help with tips on local life.
