Ireland vs Australia for Nurses
Near Europe or down under?
Australia and Ireland both attract thousands of international nurses. They offer very different lifestyles, processes and long-term options. Here is how they compare.
Registration
- Australia: nurses register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through AHPRA. Many internationally qualified nurses complete an outcome-based assessment, including a multiple-choice exam and an OSCE.
- Ireland: the NMBI assesses your documents and often asks for adaptation or an aptitude test. See NMBI registration.
Australia’s process can be more expensive overall, especially with exam fees and travel to sit the OSCE.
Visas and settlement
- Australia: nurses can access employer-sponsored and skilled migration visas, some of which lead to permanent residence. Points, age and occupation lists matter.
- Ireland: the Critical Skills Employment Permit leads to Stamp 4 after a qualifying period and later citizenship. See Stamp 4.
Both offer routes to settle, but Australian skilled migration rules are more complex and change frequently.
Family
Both countries allow nurses to bring family on most relevant visas. Ireland’s Critical Skills route allows immediate family reunification and often spouse work rights. Australia’s family inclusion depends on the visa type.
Pay and tax
Australian nurse pay varies by state and is often higher in gross terms than Irish pay, but tax, superannuation, and living costs differ. Compare take-home pay and real living costs in the city you would live in.
Cost of living and lifestyle
Australian cities such as Sydney and Melbourne have high housing costs, similar to Dublin. Australia offers a warm climate, outdoor lifestyle and large distances. Ireland offers a mild climate, close-knit communities and easy travel to Europe.
Distance from home
For nurses from India, the Philippines and Africa, flight times and costs differ. Ireland is closer to Africa and South Asia than Australia in many cases, while Australia is closer to the Philippines and parts of Asia.
Which is better for you?
- Choose Ireland for a simpler registration path, family-friendly permits, EU access and lower upfront costs.
- Choose Australia for higher gross pay in some states, sunshine and a large health system, if you can manage the costs and complexity.
