Nursing Job Interview Tips for Ireland
Show them how you care.
Irish nursing interviews, whether for the HSE, a voluntary hospital or a private nursing home, focus on real examples of how you work. Here is how to prepare and answer with confidence.
How Irish nursing interviews work
Most interviews are competency-based. Instead of asking what you would do, the panel asks what you did in a real situation. A panel usually includes a director or assistant director of nursing and a clinical nurse manager. International candidates are often interviewed online.
Use the STAR method
- Situation: briefly describe where you were and what was happening.
- Task: explain your responsibility.
- Action: describe what you did, step by step. This is the most important part.
- Result: share the outcome and what you learned.
Keep each answer to about two minutes and speak about “I”, not “we”.
Common questions
- Tell us about a time you recognised a deteriorating patient. What did you do?
- Describe a time you made or prevented a medication error.
- How do you handle a complaint from a patient or family member?
- Tell us about a time you worked under pressure with limited staff.
- How do you ensure person-centred care?
- Describe a conflict with a colleague and how you resolved it.
- How do you keep your knowledge up to date?
- Why do you want to work in Ireland, and why here?
Sample answer
Question: Tell us about a time you recognised a deteriorating patient.
Answer: “On a night shift on a surgical ward, I was caring for a patient two days after bowel surgery. During my routine observations, I noticed his heart rate had risen and his blood pressure had dropped, and he was more confused than earlier. I calculated his early warning score, which had increased, so I escalated to the doctor on call using a structured handover, stayed with the patient, increased observations and prepared IV access and fluids as prescribed. The doctor reviewed him within minutes and he was treated for early sepsis. He recovered well. It reinforced for me how important trends in observations are, and I now share this example when teaching new staff.”
Know Irish standards
Panels like candidates who understand Irish practice. Read the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and learn about national early warning scores, open disclosure, safeguarding and infection prevention. Mention them naturally in your answers.
