HSE Nursing Jobs: How to Find and Apply
Join Ireland’s public health service.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is Ireland’s largest employer of nurses. This guide explains how HSE nursing recruitment works, where to find vacancies, how panels and interviews work and how international nurses can apply.

What is the HSE?
The HSE delivers public health and social care services across Ireland, including hospitals, community services, mental health, disability and older person services. Services are organised into regional structures called health regions, each responsible for hospitals and community care in its area. Alongside the HSE, voluntary hospitals funded by the State, such as many large Dublin teaching hospitals, run their own recruitment but follow similar pay scales.
Types of HSE nursing jobs
- Staff nurse in acute hospital wards, emergency departments, theatres and critical care
- Community and public health nursing in primary care teams
- Mental health nursing in inpatient and community services
- Intellectual disability nursing in residential and day services
- Older person services in community nursing units and district hospitals
- Clinical nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist and advanced nurse practitioner roles for experienced nurses
Where to find HSE vacancies
- Official HSE job listings. The HSE publishes vacancies and recruitment campaigns online. Search by grade, region and service.
- Hospital and health region pages. Individual hospitals and regions advertise local campaigns.
- International recruitment campaigns. At times, the HSE and hospitals run campaigns specifically for overseas nurses.
- Voluntary hospital career pages. Check large voluntary hospitals separately, as they recruit independently.
Set up job alerts and check regularly, because campaigns can open and close quickly.
How HSE recruitment works
Many HSE campaigns use panels. Instead of hiring for one job, a campaign creates a ranked list of successful candidates. When posts become available, candidates are offered roles in order of ranking. Being placed on a panel does not guarantee an immediate job, but it can lead to offers over months.
Typical steps:
- Apply online with an application form, CV or both, as the campaign requires.
- Shortlisting against the essential criteria, such as NMBI registration or eligibility.
- Competency-based interview, often online for international candidates.
- Panel placement if you are successful.
- Clearance, including references, Garda vetting or police clearance from abroad, occupational health and qualification checks.
- Job offer and contract, followed by permit and visa steps if needed.
Eligibility for international nurses
Read the campaign’s essential criteria carefully. Some campaigns require current NMBI registration, while others accept applicants who are eligible for registration or hold a decision letter. Non-EEA candidates will need an employment permit, and the job advert or recruiter will explain how permits are handled.
Preparing your application
- Follow the application form instructions exactly; incomplete forms are rejected.
- Show how you meet each essential and desirable criterion.
- Give specific examples of clinical skills, leadership and teamwork.
- Include your NMBI status, English results and visa needs clearly.
- Ask referees in advance and give accurate contact details.
The HSE interview
HSE interviews are competency-based. The panel asks you to describe real situations that show the competencies for the grade, such as professional knowledge, patient-centred care, communication, teamwork, planning and organising, and managing quality and safety. Use a clear structure: describe the situation, what you did, and the outcome.
Prepare examples about:
- Recognising and escalating a deteriorating patient
- Handling a complaint or a distressed family
- Preventing a medication error
- Working under pressure on a busy shift
- Supporting a junior colleague or student
- Improving a process on your ward
Pay and conditions
HSE nurses are paid on national consolidated pay scales, with premiums for unsocial hours, a public service pension and annual leave that increases with service. Ask how your previous experience will be credited on the scale. See our nurse salary guide.
